In LoA, the skill rank improves armor-penetration for spells beyond their stated maximum level. Gaining Combat ranks allows the character to meet the requirements for new spells and increases the magnitude calculations, such as damage, duration, summoned creature stats, and the mana cost. Combat also has a number of popular utility spells that are not replicated by Nature, as well as more summons. Offensive Combat spells characteristically produce fire, poison, and "dark energy" effects to deal rapid AoE damage at a higher cost than Nature spells.
